KINDS OF NOUN
Noun can be further divided into five following groups:
1. Common Noun
2. Proper Noun
3. Abstract Noun
4. Collective Noun
5. Material Noun
COMMON NOUN
Common Noun is a name given to any person, place, or thing in general. The name ‘boy’ refers to all boys (Sonu, Mahesh, Pradeep, Suresh etc.) but does not mention any particular boy. Hence, the name ‘boy’ is a common noun. Similarly, the name ‘city’ refers to any city in the world (Bombay,Jaipur,Delhi, Washington, Sydney etc.) but does not mention any particular city. Thus, ‘city’ is a common noun. (We must use an article before a singular Common noun.)
PROPER NOUN
Proper noun is the name given to a particular person, place or thing.
For example: Suresh and Rahul are the names of Person; Delhi is the name of Place and Bottle, T.V and Pen are Things. Hence Suresh, Rahul, Delhi,Bottle,T.V. and Pen are Proper Noun.
Note: A Proper noun always begins with a capital letter.
ABSTRACT NOUN
Abstract Noun is not the name of something which we can see, or touch, but of something that we can think of. They are names given to some quality, feeling, state or action. Charity is an abstract noun for it is the name of a quality which cannot be seen but can only be understood by seeing certain actions or behavioural pattern of a person.
Example: happiness, sadness, bravery and hunger.
4. Collective Noun
A Collective Noun is the name given to a collection of persons, animals, things taken together as one.
example:
1. An army is a group of soldiers.
2. Dozen is a collection of 12 .
3. A flock is a group pf sheep, gang
4. A shoal is a group of fish.
For Example - Please give me 1 dozen banana .
